One of the biggest environmental impacts is caused by hyper-consumerism in our society today, where we make lots of impulse and unnecessary purchases at the click of a button.

To take an example of the impact of the things we use, let’s focus on the clothes we wear. The textile industry causes 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year, which is more than the combined number of international flights and shipping. Just from this industry alone, non-renewable resources of around 100 million tons a year are consumed for the production of synthetic fibers, fertilizers for cotton production, dyes, and chemicals for textiles. In addition, 20% of global industrial water pollution is caused by the dyeing and treatment of textiles.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Take a look at what you are wearing now. Did you know that the water consumed to produce a single white cotton shirt is equivalent to an individual’s drinking water for 3.5 years, while the water used to produce a pair of jeans is enough for 10 years?

Let's look at another major factor in environmental impact - agriculture. Agriculture is the largest industry in the world and is also a major source of environmental pollution. Pesticides, fertilizers, and other toxic farm chemicals can poison fresh water, marine ecosystems, air and soil, as well as seriously damage human health. Industrial animal husbandry is one of the leading causes of global warming, water depletion, forest destruction, and species extinction. The total annual greenhouse gas emissions from animal agriculture exceed the annual greenhouse gas emissions from all modes of transportation combined.

Yunnan Second Life Market is an offline sharing and selling market for sustainable living, and is currently held once a month at different locations. The marketplace encourages a zero-waste, eco-friendly lifestyle, and a plant-based, organic diet. The market also raises awareness on various social issues such as animal welfare, resource access, and people with special needs. The theme and content of the market is centered around the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, with the goal of providing a meetup for sustainable living that is friendly to the environment and good for health and wellbeing.

In order to have an educational and rewarding experience for everyone at the market, we are looking for vendors, loose items for sale, workshop instructors, guest speakers, performers, and kid-friendly activity instructors.

1) Pre-registered Second-hand Item Vendors (15 Booths)

These vendors will need to register in advance to secure a booth. During registration, vendors will have to send photos of the items for sale for verification purposes. Please register with us by February 19th to secure your spot! Vendors who sell second-hand household items and second-hand festive items are welcome, but we do encourage more vendors to create products from re-used items or recycled materials. We will be releasing an article before the event to promote your items as well.

2) Pre-registered Eco-friendly Product Vendors (20 Booths)

In addition to encouraging the practice of reusing and repurposing, we also welcome vendors who sell new household products that are earth-friendly, chemical-free with very limited or no plastic packaging (e.g. hand-crafted natural soap bars, biodegradable toothbrushes, reusable shopping bags). We also encourage local craftsmen to bring their handicrafts and festive crafts to the market. These vendors will need to register in advance to secure a booth. During registration, vendors will have to send photos of the items for sale for verification purposes. 3)Pre-registered Local Organic Product Vendors, Vegan Food and Drink Vendors (10 Booths)

We are also looking for local organic farmers to promote and sell their products that are chemical-free(no animal products). Vegan (festive) food and drinks are also welcome. Please avoid using single-use packaging for your food and drinks e.g. plastic/paper cups (they have a plastic lining inside), plastic straws, plastic bags, and containers. We highly recommend not to use any packaging, or to use biodegradable packaging or reusable cups/containers instead. These vendors will need to register in advance to secure a booth. During registration, vendors will have to send photos of the items for sale for verification purposes. Please register with us by February 19th to secure your spot! We will be releasing an article before the event to promote your items as well.

4) Booth for Second-hand Loose Items

We will set up a booth specifically for second-hand loose items. You may be interested if you have only a few items for sale and do not want to book a whole booth or if you want to sell your items but cannot make it to the venue. Our team will be responsible for the sales on-site. Please send photos of the items for sale for verification. You are welcome to drop off the items on the day of the event or arrange a time to drop them off before the event. The owners of these items are not required to pay a deposit.

5) Workshop Instructors

We are looking for any DIY workshop instructors to create new products using different materials - preferably reclaimed, recycled, or eco-friendly materials.

6) Guest Speakers

We are looking for guest speakers to give a talk related to sustainability. It’s possible for the same person to conduct the workshop and also give a speech, but we do encourage more people to get involved.

7) Performers and Kid-friendly Activity Instructors

We are looking for performers to perform at our market. Performances include, but are not limited to, playing music, singing, dancing, meditating, and yoga class, etc. We are also looking for instructors to lead kid-friendly activities at the market.

8) Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers who can help during the event as well as to help organize the event.

In return, you will receive a volunteer certificate presented by LVAN after the event. Through volunteering with us, what you will gain includes: having the opportunity to learn from sustainability-minded people and entrepreneurs, gaining knowledge and experiences in sustainability, and obtaining event organization, coordination, and communication skills.
